the monarchs could either strengthen their countries, which might later on affect some of that countries battles which would then give that country more territory. Or they could add on to the trade or government. there are lots of things they could do to help their country. Of course there are also ways that they could weaken their country, for instance, they could neglect their soldiers in battle or maybe tax the cities too much and cause an uprising that would later make the cities defense weak to other countries. So in other words, the way you rule a kingdom greatly affects those that come after you.
