They died

Well, they often died. Most lived, if they got were given food, water, and other attention. The problem was, a lot of people were in situations where that would not happen, so a lot died of plague plus neglect. People would not stay around them and left, in many cases. In other cases, whole households got sick, and there was no one to get food and water. Many people were simply kicked out and left to die.

A lot of people went to monastic hospitals. They were tended there, though the staffs were overworked and often got sick and died along with the patients. Some people hired physicians. But they got sick, too.
