Well, they often died. Most lived, if they got were given food, water, and other attention. The problem was, a lot of people were in situations where that would not happen, so a lot died of plague plus neglect. People would not stay around them and left, in many cases. In other cases, whole households got sick, and there was no one to get food and water. Many people were simply kicked out and left to die.

A lot of people went to monastic hospitals. They were tended there, though the staffs were overworked and often got sick and died along with the patients. Some people hired physicians. But they got sick, too.

They left the cities and waited it out in their country estates, as they had the means to do so. It didn't take them long to realize that removing themselves from Plague-stricken areas could keep them from contracting the disease.

Common treatments for the plague in the Middle Ages were bleeding (using leeches) and laxatives to try to expel the disease from the body. To avoid the smells that were believed to be the source of the sickness, many people carried flowers or herbs with them, wore perfume (if they could afford it), or burned incense. Some more disturbing treatments included bathing in human urine or drinking pus from buboes (the swollen lymph nodes for which the bubnoic plague is named). The very rich even tried drinking liquid gold or powdered gems to ward off the plague. Faith-based treatments included blessings from priests, prayer, or wearing lucky charms. One rather unreliable-looking source stated that people were sometimes even coated in Mercury and stuck in an oven.

Poorly educated Plague Doctors arose too. They had beak-shaped leather masks that held herbs in the nose to ward off the disease, long wax-covered robes, and a stick to poke their victims--err--patients with.

Treatment today is isolation in a hospital and strong antibiotics.
