One of the most often used alternate names for the common cold is acute viral nasopharyngitis. Other medical names of the common cold are rhinopharygitis and acute coryza. These are the different names of the disease (common cold) that is caused by the sub-microscopic pathogens known as viruses.

Colds are usually caused by the rhinovirus (up to 40% of colds), or Coronaviruses (about 20%), but there are more than 200 viruses that can cause the common cold.
