The disease is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and has been responsible for over 25 million deaths worldwide since its discovery. AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) represents the advanced stage of HIV infection, leading to severe immune system damage and increased susceptibility to opportunistic infections.

Similarly, diabetes caused 1.5 million (2.7%) deaths in 2012, up from 1.0 million (2.0%) deaths in 2000.
