Herpes viruses primarily cause two types of infections: Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) types 1 and 2. HSV-1 is commonly associated with oral herpes, leading to cold sores, while HSV-2 typically causes genital herpes, resulting in sores in the genital area. Additionally, varicella-zoster virus, another member of the herpes virus family, causes chickenpox and can reactivate later in life to cause shingles. Other herpes viruses can lead to conditions such as mononucleosis and certain types of cancer, like Kaposi's sarcoma.
Viruses cause the common cold, AIDS, herpes, meningitis, smallpox (currently extinct in the wild), influenza, and many other diseases.
Some diseases caused by sperical shaped viruses cause the flu & the common cold. Rod shaped cause HIV & herpes.
Viruses cause many diseases from the common cold, flu, and chicken pox to herpes and AIDS and measles.

the herpes
Herpes is a family if viruses that cause different diseases. Herpes simplex I is associated with cold sores, herpes simplex II is associated with genital herpes (although those two can be reversed), CMV and EBV can cause mononucleosis and colds and congenital infections in babies as well as cancers, roseolovirus can cause roseola, human herpes virus 8 causes Kaposi's sarcoma and other cancers. The herpes varicella-zoster virus causes chicken pox (varicella). It lies dormant in nerve cells and years later it can reactivate to cause shingles (zoster). So shingles is one example of a herpes virus infection.
