The intercostal muscles are located between the ribs and they lift the diaphragm allowing oxygen to flow in and out of the lungs. Basically, they aid in breathing.

There are three levels of intercostal muscles all situated between the ribs. The layers are named according to depth into the thorax, the outer (or external) intercostal being the most superficial the inner (or internal) intercostals being in the middle and the innermost intercostal being the deepest. The muscle group as a whole help respiration by moving the ribs and thus changing the pressure within the thorax consequently drawing air in or pushing it out. The external intercostals are active during both quiet and high intensity respiration and they help to draw air into the lungs by pulling the ribs up and out. The internal and innermost intercostals both assist exhalation only during high intensity breathing by pulling the ribs back and down. There are those that believe all the intercostal assist in inhalation however due to the direction in which the fibres run between the ribs this is unlikely to be the case.
