The sinuses connect to the nasal cavity. They are hollow cavities located within the bones surrounding the nasal cavity and are lined with a mucous membrane.
The dagger-shaped bone in the nasal cavity is called the vomer bone. It is located in the midline of the nasal cavity and helps to separate the left and right nasal passages.
A smell impulse begins in olfactory receptor cells located in the olfactory epithelium in the nasal cavity. These receptor cells detect specific odorants and send signals to the brain via the olfactory nerve.

The nasal cavity is kept moist by the production of mucus by specialized cells called goblet cells and mucous glands. Mucus helps to trap foreign particles and pathogens, keeping the nasal cavity moist and protecting the respiratory system. Additionally, the nasal cavity has a rich blood supply that helps to maintain moisture and humidity.
The oral and nasal cavities meet at the rear of the mouth in an area known as the pharynx. This region serves as a shared passageway for air and food, with the nasal cavity located above and the oral cavity located below.
