Depends. In the Sling and Swathe you use two bandages. You tie them together at the short side and place the knot at the elbow. One bandage will wrap around the neck and be tied behind the neck to support the arm from being lowered. The "swathe" will be tied around the persons chest, catching the arm and being tied under the opposite arm pit (if your splinting the right arm, you would tie it under the left arm pit). The Swathe prevents the patient from moving the arm out from the body. A sling only is tied behind the neck. Make sure you always pad the area behind any not. There are numerous ways to do this. This is how I do it in the field. There is no wrong way providing the arm is immobilized and there is no further harm to patient. This is a skill that is hard to describe in writting and you really need to practice it. One of these days I will post a video on you tube as to how I do it.
