The CA 19-9 test measures the level of tumor associated antigens in the blood serum. It is not diagnostic of cancer, but can help support a diagnosis. It can also support the diagnosis of pancreatic or hepatobiliary tumors. Other cancers such as colorectal, lung, and gallbladder cancers may cause an increased level. A result of 108 is elevated; normal results range from 0-37 units/mL. There could be a number of reasons for that abnormal result, but that is what the test is generally used to evaluate.
