Counselors are sometimes distinguished from psychotherapists, but the distinction is subtle and does not always apply to what actually happens in the therapy room. Counselors, like therapists, spend most of their time listening to the client in order to understand his/her specific concerns and life circumstances. For many people, this kind of focuses listening is itself therapeutic. Other things counselors do in order to facilitate client growth include: socratic questioning (i.e., providing insight through questioning), interpreting, reframing, challenging, supporting, confronting, advising, modeling, and role-playing. Which of these is used at any particular point depends on the therapist's theoretical orientation, the specific needs of the client, and the stage of therapy.
