What does a glucose meter measure?

Blood glucose monitors use capillary action to mix a sample of blood with glucose oxidase. This mixture, gluconic acid, mixes with yet another chemical called ferricyanide to create ferrocyanide. Using electrodes within the test strip, current is applied to the ferrocyanide. The concentration of glucose has a direct effect on the current that is then translated into a measurement that is reasonably accurate.

There are some variations between glucose meters but you can use most glucose meters in the same way.

1) Wash your hands (otherwise, it can affect your results).

2. Prepare your lancing device.

3) Turn on your glucometer

4) Prick your finger and place a sample of blood on the tip of your test strip.

However, with some meters the test strip needs to be placed in the meter first and then you would prick your finger and place the blood sample on the test strip. Otherwise the key process is the same.

5) Place the test strip in to the meter (unless it is required to go in first as stated in point 4).

6) Now look for your result on the meter. Most meters will provide a result very quickly.
