An enlarged heart simply means it is of a larger than normal size. This can happen as a result of extensive exercise, as seen with athletes, or a more serious medical condition.

The heart handles constant high pressures, which it attempts to keep under control. When these pressures are uncontrolled the heart responds by creating a larger chamber and thickening the walls to prevent death. In athletes, the entire heart will become larger, in other situations only one side or one chamber may become disproportionate which causes health problems.
