First, it can have little or no signs or symptoms.

Often, it appears as red, swollen gums that bleed easily when you brush or floss.

Sometimes it can manifest with teeth that become longer as the gums recede.

In severe cases it can show as teeth getting loose, chronic bad breath, or a bad taste in your mouth.

A routine checkup by a dentist or dental hygienist can determine if you have infected gums.
