Metastatic cancer is not a type of cancer, it is a stage of the disease, a late stage. Most cancer types can form new tumours in the body, like a weed sends its seeds in the wind to sprout into more weeds. The new tumours are called "metastases". Metastatic cancer is cancer that has already started this seeding-out process.
The first place where cancer metastasizes is in the lymph nodes. Later, it can go to the liver, the lungs, the bones, in fact just about anywhere.
For a person with cancer, knowing if there are metastases or not is very important because it is a sign that the cancer is aggressive. Cancer without metastases is often curable but metastatic cancer is usually not curable.
melanoma
Usually the liver, lungs, brain and bones.
once any cancer metastasizes it can spread anywhere, including the colon, via the blood stream or lymphatic system.
squamous cell carcinoma
Bowel cancer primarily spreads to other parts of the body through a process called metastasis, often targeting the liver and lungs first. However, if bowel cancer metastasizes to the bones, it does not mean that the cancer can spread from the bones to other areas; rather, the cancer cells originated from the bowel. The bone metastasis indicates that the cancer has advanced, but it remains classified as bowel cancer regardless of where it spreads.
All skin cancers have the potential to metastasize but melanoma is the most likely to spread or metastasize to other parts of the body. Squamous cell is the next most likely to spread. Basal cell rarely metastasizes.
When any type of cancer metastasizes and spreads to the bone or other organs, this is very serious. Only a trained doctor who looks at the pathology of patient who has cancer that has spread to the bone can make such a diagnosis.
If it is caught in it's early stages, then the skin cancer may be removed. If it is removed before it spreads or metastasizes, then your chances of survival are good. Be sure to get screening done regularly, especially if you have had any type of cancer before or aif you have a family history of cancer.
There are many different types of skin cancer. I suggest you do a search for "different kinds of skin cancer" to find out about all the different types.
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the type of skin cancer that rarely metastasizes. It typically grows slowly and is generally localized, making it less likely to spread to other parts of the body compared to other skin cancers like melanoma or squamous cell carcinoma. However, if left untreated, it can cause significant local damage. Early detection and treatment are essential for a favorable outcome.
Brain cancer is classified into "grades" of severity defined by the world health organization, rather than stages, since it rarely metastasizes. Other cancers may metastasize to the brain by their fourth stage, and the metastasis may then be assigned a grade of its own.
UVA (which causes tanning) also causes skin aging, eventually giving skin a tough leather like texture. UVB (which causes burning) also causes skin cancer, frequently melanoma an aggressive cancer that sometimes metastasizes throughout the body.
