What does the thyroid and parathyroid do?

Secretion of the parathyroid hormon(PTH). It is a major hormone responsible for Calcium, Magnesium and Phosphate level regulation in the blood. It impacts the kidney secretion of these ions and promotes the production of calcitriol.

The parathyroid gland's main function is secreting the Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) which increases the level of blood calcium and decreases the level of blood phosphate.

PTH works on three different levels.

1.Bone: PTH has a short term effect, and a long term effect on bones.

A.short term effect: binding to receptors located on osteocytes and osteoblasts leading to a high level of stimulation of the calcium pump that removes the calcium phosphate salts from the bone and takes it to the blood.

B.long term effect: binding to receptors located on osteocytes and osteoblasts leading to the activation of osteoclasts and the resorption of calcium and phosphate from the bone to the blood.

2.kidneys: mainly, increases calcium reabsorption in distal conviluted tubules and collecting ducts, and decreasing phosphate reabsorption in proximal conviluted tubules. in addition to the production of the active form of vitamin D which is 1,25 Dihydroxy cholicalciferole.

3.Intestine: incrases the absorption of calcium and phosphate, with the help of the active form of vitamin D that has been produced in the kidneys.
