When a person holds his or her breath and manages to continue holding it, eventually the individual will lose consciousness due to the lack of oxygen being supplied to the brain. At this point in time, the person can no longer continue to force the body to suffocate itself, and the body will then begin to breathe again while the person is unconscious.

Actually, it's not the lack of oxygen, it's the build up of carbon dioxide that triggers the autonomic nervous system to force you to breathe.
