What fragrance are tampons scented with?

i say they are...like strong soaps...they can cause itching, burning, and swelling...as a matter of fact i just got the playtex sport and didnt know they were scented and have horrible itching, so i would say yes stay away because they COULD BE dangerous...they dont bother some people but dont risk it

No one knows. The 'fragrance' can include a cocktail of several hundred chemicals, tampon companies are self-regulated so don't even need to tell the FDA what chemical ingredients they use in tampons. There is currently a bill trying to be passed that would require independent regulation and safety testing of tampons so we know what is used in tampons and the health risks.

There's no such thing as a safe tampon.

All tampons have a negative effect on vaginal hygiene and health: they encourage bacterial growth, prevent vaginal cleaning, change vaginal pH, damage vaginal tissues, and commercial tampons contain harmful substances such as dioxin. Thus why tampons commonly cause vaginal infections and are linked to Toxic shock syndrome (TSS), also why there are so many precautions to follow.

Commercial tampons could potentially contain hundreds of chemicals with unknown health risks both short-term and long-term - tampon companies don't inform customers what ingredients they use, but we do know that they have a long history of knowingly risking womens health. Commercial tampons that are scented (these are the only type of tampons that would be scented) have an additional 100-200 chemicals added to give them the 'scent' - these can cause irritation, increase risks of vaginal infections and TSS, and may have long-term risks due to cumulative exposure.

The sole purpose is for marketing purposes.

Tampon companies rely on menstrual taboos to increase their sales - for example the idea that periods are embarrassing result in tampon companies making discreet wrapping, it's easier for them to take advantage of those menstrual taboos than work against them. Scented tampons are a response to the idea that menstruation is dirty, the irony being that scented tampons are more likely to cause bad odour as a result of pH imbalance and vaginal infections caused by these tampons.

When inserted tampons are internal so nothing can be smelled, thus no need for scented tampons, also menstruation will usually only smell bad when using unhygienic options such as tampons or commercial pads so if odour is an issue it's best to switch to hygienic options like cups.
