What happens if a tampon stays inside of you for a week?

Tampons should be changed every 4-6 hours to stay hygienic - tampon companies say up to 8 hours but this is too long and would mean you were using too high an absorbency. The longer you leave tampons the longer bacteria are allowed to multiply within the vagina, and they do so exponentially. The longer tampons are left the worse it is for hygiene, also the higher the risks of vaginal infections and TSS, plus of course if leaving too long you increase chances of the tampon leaking.

You remove the tampon and make sure not to use tampons again for that cycle.

Watch for symptoms of Toxic shock syndrome, these will likely have come on while you were using a tampon and the risks are low once you've removed the tampon, but watch for low blood pressure and high fever. Watch for symptoms of vaginal infections such as Bacterial Vaginosis, this will include bad-smelling excessive discharge, also watch for symptoms like irritation. If you see either set of symptoms you should see your doctor as soon as possible for treatment.

The longer a tampon is left the longer bacteria have to multiply and menstrual tissue has to decompose, all while the tampon can reduce the vagina's ability to fight off infection and clean itself. After a week you would be at very high risk of vaginal infection such as Bacterial Vaginosis, you would also be at greater risk of developing Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), even without symptoms it's best to see a doctor to ensure you're okay. At very least you would experience a very bad odor.
