The reason to take prenatal vitamins is to be sure that you are getting everything you and your baby need in order for s/he to develop properly. It increases the chances of healthy development, but of course, at the end of the day, sometimes development issues happen whether vitamins were taken or not. In addition, if you don't take them, it doesn't mean you will have an unhealthy or underdeveloped baby. Throughout history, women have given birth to healthy baby and never had access to prenatal vitamins. It's a matter of knowing what we now know and trying to do the best we can to ensure good, healthy outcomes.
Folic acid is present in the fresh fruits and veggies you eat as well as Orange Juice. Women had successful pregnancies for years without pills. However, you should take vitamins and any pills prescribed by your doctor because your body needs extra help and the baby needs everything it can get to increase the chances of a healthy pregnancy for both of you. Talk to your friends, family and doctor about ways to help you remember to take all those pills. In all the stress and excitment in a day it is easy to forget pills, that is how a lot of people end up pregnant. :)
