It may be a different thing, but David Grove, creator of Clean Language, used to do something he called 'intergenerational healing', I think.

David would take the client's attention back to a time before the current 'problem' existed and access resources from the client's personal history, including family history, which could then be brought to bear on the problem.

All this was 'just a metaphor' but because the information came from the client's own system, with minimal additions from the therapist, it would feel very 'real' and 'true'. And since metaphor is the preferred 'language' of the other-than-conscious mind, deep changes would be made and would stay changed.
