Hypochondraplasia is a mild from of 'Achondraplasia', aka 'Dwarfism. My son was born with HypocondraplasiaMay 2003 and was diagonosed at 28 wks. pregnancy. Doctors originally thought he had Downs Syndrome b/c of the larger head/shorter limbs. After doing the FISH test, and the Downs being negative, Doctors suggested testing for the FGFR3 gene mutuation (Achnondraplasia). My husband and I were dumbfounded. The Geneticist said "Little People are born to average size adults all the time." Anyway, It was confirmed that Patrick had hypo so his symptoms aren't AS pronounced at those with Achondraplasia. Basically - Like the show "Little People, Big World" - typically little people (and they prefer this over 'dwarf' or 'midget') are about 4 ft. tall adult height. Because my son has HYPO - we're hoping for 5ft. tall adult height. I know lots of people have petite kids and many adults aren't tall . . .the difference with any skeletal dysplasia is the proportion of the limbs to the body - specifically the shorter arms/legs and larger head. Hope this helps. :)
