She was one of the first people to publically struggle with anorexia nervosa. This disease at the time wasn't well known and she brought it to the attention of the public. Sadly, she eventually died from it on Feb. 4 1983 at the age of 32.
On February 4, 1983, less than a month before her thirty-third birthday, Carpenter suffered heart failure at her parents' home in Downey, California. She was taken to Downey Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead twenty minutes later. The LA coroner gave the cause of death as "heartbeat irregularities brought on by chemical imbalances associated with anorexia nervosa." Her divorce was scheduled to have been finalized that day. The autopsy stated that Carpenter's death was the result of emetine cardiotoxicity due to anorexia nervosa. Under the anatomical summary, the first item was heart failure, with anorexia as second. The third finding was cachexia, which is extremely low weight and weakness and general body decline associated with chronic disease. Emetine cardio toxicity implies that Carpenter abused ipecac syrup, an easily obtained emetic medicine that is only meant to be taken by persons who have accidentally swallowed poison.
Anorexia nervosa is starving yourself to the point of either death or long term disability. It is probably a psychological illness that effects mainly women (and some men), that is caused when females think they are too fat or when they feel they have no control in their lives and the only thing they can control is their appetite. There may be psychical causes of the illness, such as a problem with glands, but, most think it is a mental illness. It takes a lot of therapy to save a person who is anorexic. Many die, directly from the disease, or indirectly from the medical problems the illness causes. Anorexia was unknown to the general public, until February 4 1983, when world famous Karen Carpenter, singer/drummer of the 1970s group the Carpenters, died from cardiac arrest due to anorexia nervosa.
He majored in Political Science at Columbia, and graduated in 1983. He attended Harvard Law School and specialized in Constitutional Law; he graduated with academic honors in 1991.
Karen Carpenter (1950 - 1983), singer/drummer of the 1970s group the Carpenters. Ms. Carpenter was controlled by her mother, her brother, A & M, and her husband. Her passive father did and said nothing of importance. With everyone controlling her, Karen felt the only part of her life she could control was her weight, so she starved herself to death trying to have some control that everyone else denied her. Prior to the death of Karen Carpenter, almost no one knew about anorexia nervosa or bulimia. Ms. Carpenter's death on Feb. 4, 1983 made eating disorders world famous. Prior to Feb. 4, 1983, only a few doctors knew anything about eating disorders. Read the 2010 book: "Little Girl Blue, The Life of Karen Carpenter" by Randy Schmidt. It explains how an excellent drummer/singer could starve herself to death when she felt she had no control in her life and nothing to live for.
