Cryptosporidium is a microscopic parasite that causes the diarrheal disease cryptosporidiosis. Both the parasite and the disease are commonly known as "Crypto." The parasite forms an infection of the small intestine which causes diarrhea. Symptoms include an array of common gastrointestinal issues such as:

• Abdominal cramping
• Frequent and often very watery diarrhea
• Malnutrition and weight loss (in severe cases)
• Nausea

Generally, people with weak immune systems are more likely to be infected such as those with HIV or AIDS.

Some drugs such as Nitazoxanide and Metronidazole can by used to treat the symptoms, however, the infection is often reoccurring. In order to overcome the condition, the infected person must strengthen their immune system.
