Answer

"Egotistic Suicide" also refers to a sociological theory of Emil Durkheim that relates suicide to social, religious and political integration in society, and predicts an increased suicide rate when individualism is substituted for strong group identity. As social structures weaken, people become "excessively individualistic," and more inclined to pursue self-interests at the expense of pro-social behaviors.

Durkheim's definition of "egotistic" or "egotistical" suicide refers more to a larger sociological phenomenon of disconnection that undermines a sense of meaningful existence than an individual psychological state. The end result, however, is self-destruction due to a lack of existential purpose and attachment to other people.
