Renal cell carcinoma (also known as hypernephroma) is a kidney cancer that originates in the lining of one of the very small tubes that transports fluid and concentrates it. RCC is the most common type of kidney cancer in adults (80%). It has been described as being among the most lethal of all the urological cancers. Initial treatment is usually a full or partial kidney removal. If it is local to the kidney, the 5-year survival rate is 60-70%, but this is much lower if it has spread. It is resistant to radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
