What is importance of rib cage in our body?

The human rib cage is a very important part of the body.

It helps protect the heart and lungs, as well as offers assistance with breathing. Numerous muscles also attach to the the rib cage. The rib cage is flexible in nature due to the fact that the ribs are attached to the sternum and have a flexable portion made of cartilage.

There are 12 pairs of ribs in the human body, for a grand total of 24 ribs. There are the same amount of ribs in a man and a woman. There are three distinct categories of ribs.

The first 7 pairs are called true ribs because they attach directly to the sternum. The second category of ribs are the false ribs.

The 8th-10th pairs are in this category. They are referred to false ribs because they do not directly attach to the sternum, but instead attach to other ribs.

The last category are the floating ribs. The last two pairs of ribs are in this category. They do not attach to anything in the chest, but do attach to the bones in the spine.

The sternum is the hard flat 'breast bone' in the center of the chest to which the first 7 pairs of ribs attach. There are three parts to the sternum. The most superior portion, the part at the top, is the manubrium.

The middle portion is the gladiolus. The most inferior portion, the bottom part, is the xiphoid process. the xiphoid process can be felt just above the abdomen. Just below the xiphoid process marks the area of the diaphragm.

This is a flat thin muscle that goes across your abdomen and helps you to breathe. If this muscle spasms you may have hiccups, or if you get punched in this area you will have a feeling of "getting the breathe knocked out of you".
