The incisors (front teeth) are designed to tear or cut food, so that smaller pieces can be chewed. Once the food is in small chunks, it can be ground by the bicuspids and molars.
Hawks rip there food into small pieces with their tallons and beaks, then swallow the chunks.
Ground food is simply small cut-up food. This is done with a food processor, meat grinder and the like.

Although it has advertised on commercials that it is, I have personally found Ground Whole Barley in many of the ingredients. This is a known source of gluten. The only dog food that I found so far by Iams that did not contain this was the ProActive Health Adult Chunks. It has to be the Adult Chunks. Other ProActive Health bags claimed to have Barley.
