Leprosy is an ancient disease and 1st described by Hansen. It is then sometimes called Hansen's disease. He 1st was able to show that this disease was caused by a bacteria. He actually was the 1st person to show that any disease was caused by bacteria. Leprosy causes damage to the skin and the nervous system. People with this have deformed faces and have lost feeling in the skin. They often have lost bone, fingers and toes. It is not very contagious. People who have this are called lepers and they were often cast out of society and were called "untouchables".
