Menstrual extraction is a means of removing the uterus lining upon onset of menstruation - as a means of preventing having to menstruate.

It uses a Del Em which is a jar with two tubes coming out; one tube is attached to a manual pump and the other is attached to a syringe - the syringe is inserted into the cervix and the pumpaction sucks away the uterus lining. It is very similar to early abortion methods, and should only be carried out by trained professionals.

It became popular in the 70's amongst women's health clinics as a means of empowering women - by allowing women to control when they menstruate freeing them from both the inconvenience of menstruation and their dependance on male-dominated sanitary product companies, as well as it also being able to be used as a method of abortion. At the time tampons were known to be causing serious health problems, even before the TSS outbreak, women's clinics were aware of the risks so looking for alternatives.

Can you suction out your period?

You can't, but a professional can. Menstrual extraction is not commonly used today because it is not the healthier option, but it become very popular amongst women's clinics in the 1970's as a way of avoiding use of tampons (at the time were very dangerous) and taking control over their periods. Essentially menstrual extraction is the same principle as mechanical abortion, a straw is inserted through the cervix and a device is used to suck out the uterus lining. Only professionals should attempt this, if done wrong it can cause serious damage to the reproductive organs, infection, and hemorrhage that may be fatal.
