Polychromasia in humans is due to red blood cells that are released from the marrow before they are fully developed. New cells appear sort of blue in staining. Old cells appear orange. The term polychrom- means many colors.
The blue cells are called reticulocytes. This is due to the fibers that are not removed yet. This is due to the fact that they are sort of rushed out to do their work. This is often a sign of anemia. Anemia is a lack of red blood cells. One has to rule out bleeding or an immune problem.

polychromasia: the reaction of red cells to stain as indicated by the appearance of bluish or grayish colored erythrocytes Polychromasia refers to variation in erythrocyte coloration. This variation largely relates to the maturation of the cell. The younger form will appear with bluer cytoplasm in Romanowsky stains; the mature form will stain uniformly orange-pink. No standardized index of avian polychromasia is being employed clinically. A slight degree of polychromasia is normal. Increases in polychromasia suggest an increased bone marrow response. No polychromasia correlates with non-responsive, anemic patients, which is characterized by all cells exhibiting the same coloration. This finding presents a guarded prognosis, pending resolution of the cause of the non-regeneration.
Polychromasia itself is not inherently lethal; it is a term used to describe the presence of red blood cells with varying colors due to differences in hemoglobin content, often indicating a regenerative response to anemia. However, the underlying condition causing polychromasia, such as hemolytic anemia or other blood disorders, can be serious or life-threatening if not treated. Therefore, while polychromasia can signal significant health issues, it is not a direct cause of lethality.

SLT (Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty) Polychromasia refers to a rare phenomenon observed in the context of glaucoma treatment. It involves the appearance of multiple colors in the trabecular meshwork of the eye after SLT, a laser procedure used to lower intraocular pressure. This coloration is attributed to the dispersion of pigment within the trabecular meshwork, which can occur as a result of the laser's interaction with the tissue. While generally not harmful, it can be an interesting clinical observation for ophthalmologists.
This year's comment at the end of the blood work panel results. (Polychromasia Moderate) The comment on last years test by the same company the comment was mild poikilocytosis are the two different stages of the same thing? I don't have health insurance so I need to know if this is something I should pay a doctor to tell me what it means. This was on the results of a fasting 12 hour blood panel taken at a health fair .
