Pterygium is a non-cancerous growth of tissue on the conjunctiva, the clear membrane covering the white part of the eye. It often appears as a fleshy, triangular-shaped lesion that can extend onto the cornea. Commonly associated with prolonged exposure to UV light, wind, and dust, pterygium can cause irritation, redness, and vision problems if it grows large enough to obstruct the visual pathway. Treatment may involve monitoring, lubricating eye drops, or surgical removal if it becomes bothersome.
