As the name implies, it is a pathology secondary to a repetitive action such as typing, knitting, doing a job task, etc. Basically, you overuse some part of your body to the point where it causes a problem. The best way to prevent a RSI is to avoid doing what is causing the problem. To help you may also build strength in the effected area and/or do some self-maintenance such as stretching, icing and resting. Often, people with a RSI try to overcome their situation without avoiding the action(s) that caused the problem and become worse. A RSI usually gets better and worse with the worse becoming more predominant over time and interfering with the person's ability to continue said activity and interfering with their usual daily routine.

Overuse of muscles and tendons in certain areas of the body could cause a repetitive injury. This could be related to your occupation or a leisure activity that you frequently engage in.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a repetitive stress injury (which is to say, stress builds up when you do the same kind of motion over and over) and it has nothing to do with arthritis which is a degenerative illness (the body is wearing out with age).
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a repetitive stress kind of injury, so anyone who makes the same kind of motion a lot would be vulnerable. Typing on keyboards is a typical cause.
This claim is turning more and more into a popular myth, it is turning out that RSI is more likely to happen to some one with a predisposition to OA It does not actually cause OA.
It depends on how serious the injury is. It could cause sickness, stress, and if the damage is severe, it could cause death.
Plantar fasciitis is a condition caused by repetitive injury to the plantar fascia. Repetitive injury results in inflammation that can be painful. Longstanding inflammation and repetitive injury leads to chronic pathologic changes, usually near the origin of the plantar fascia. Tightness of the plantar fascia and Achilles tendon/calf musculature are predisposing factors.Plantar fasciitis is common in:People who spend considerable amounts of time on their feet (mail carriers, warehouse workers, construction workers)People with certain foot alignment abnormalitiesRunners (especially long distance runners who cause constant, repetitive stress on the plantar fascia)Overweight individualsPeople with certain rheumatologic conditions
Ventral ulnar spurring refers to the formation of bone spurs on the underside (ventral) of the ulna bone in the forearm. These spurs can develop due to repetitive stress or injury and may cause pain and limited range of motion in the wrist. Treatment options include rest, splinting, physical therapy, or in severe cases, surgery to remove the spur.
Stress fracture in the foot would cause pain and swelling in the affected area. Rest is the best thing you can do to aid in healing. Low impact exercise is best for approximately 6 to 8 weeks to ensure you won't cause further chronic injury.

Because they don't hurt people
It is important to be aware of health and safety when using computers. Extended use of a computer can cause repetitive strain injury.
