The Hepatic Function Panel is a group of clinical laboratory blood tests used for the evaluation of a patient with symptoms of liver disease or injury. It includes diagnosis and quantitative assessment of the disease and monitoring the effects of certain medications on the liver. The tests contained in the Hepatic Function Panel are designed to measure multiple aspects of hepatocyte function, including biliary conjugation and excretion, hepatocellular metabolism, and protein synthesis.

The Hepatic Function Panel consists of the following tests:

Common and basic hepatic function panels:

1. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT). This enzyme, found in the liver, plays a role in metabolism. Its levels are especially high with acute hepatitis.

2. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP). This enzyme is found in the liver, bones, intestines and kidneys. Kids have higher levels of ALP than adults due to bone growth. But ALP levels can also increase in viral infections, liver diseases, or blocked bile ducts.

3. Aspartate aminotransferase (AST). This enzyme, which plays a role in processing proteins. When the liver is injured or inflamed, levels of AST in the blood rise.

4. Bilirubin is a byproduct of the breakdown of red blood cells. It passes through the liver and is lost from the body. But if that doesn't happen due to a liver disease, bilirubin levels in the blood can rise and the skin can take on the yellow discoloration known as jaundice.

5. Albumin and total protein. Protein is needed to build and maintain muscles, bones, blood, and organ tissue. Sometimes when there's a problem with the liver, it can't make proteins as well, so protein levels decrease.
