You can be 'exposed' to herpes at anytime throughout your life, and you may or may not contract it. If you test positive to herpes, irrelevant of whether you have symptoms or not, you have herpes. Some people do refer to themselves as being 'carriers' because they do not experience recurring symptoms, however, they do still in fact have herpes.
