Tuberculosis (commonly shortened to TB) is an infection caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis.Atypical mycobacteria are other mycobacterial species that MAY cause disease but do NOT cause Tuberculosis. Unlike tuberculosis, atypical infections are NOT contagious. Atypical mycobacteria are very different from and yet are called types of tuberculosis. Also they are not passed from person to person.
For example a form of atypical tuberculosis (mycobacteria chelonei) was only discovered in the late 1950s'.
On a certain pacific island the hands of certain islanders were infected with sores. The cause was actually the turtles they were handling! I think "Chelonei", is actually the species of turtle.
Typical is an expected outcome; atypical would be an unexpected outcome.
"80 percent atypical pneumonia" typically refers to a diagnosis where 80 percent of pneumonia cases are caused by atypical pathogens, such as Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydia pneumoniae, or Legionella species, rather than typical bacterial causes like Streptococcus pneumoniae. Atypical pneumonia often presents with milder symptoms and may require different treatment approaches. Understanding this distinction helps guide appropriate antibiotic therapy and informs clinical management.
Typical antipsychotic drugs primarily block dopamine receptors in the brain, while atypical antipsychotic drugs affect multiple neurotransmitters, including serotonin and dopamine. Atypical antipsychotics are less likely to cause motor side effects like tremors and muscle stiffness compared to typical antipsychotics. However, atypical antipsychotics may have a higher risk of metabolic side effects such as weight gain and diabetes.
Typical speech patterns refer to the normal way most people speak, while atypical speech patterns deviate from this norm and may include characteristics like stuttering, lisping, or unusual intonation. Atypical speech patterns can be the result of various factors such as neurological conditions, developmental delays, or speech disorders.
In the word atypical, the prefix a means not; atypical means not typical.
The letter 'a-' is the prefix in atypical.
PCR testing should be used to distinguish between M.tuberculosis from other atypical non tuberculous mycobacteria.

Typical vertebrae have common characteristics found throughout the spine, such as a body, vertebral arch, spinous process, and transverse processes. Atypical vertebrae vary in structure, size, or shape compared to typical vertebrae, often having unique features to accommodate specific functions in certain regions of the spine, such as the atlas and axis vertebrae in the cervical spine.
Atypical means "not typical", not conforming to a usual or regular type of something, or irregular.
