The prostate is a gland which is common as part of the male reproductive system in most mammalian species. It produces an alkaline fluid which helps the first jets of sperm in their attempt at surviving the acidic environment of the vaginal tract, similar to other 'additives' to the sperm from other glands.

Apart from that, the prostate has some muscles which help create the jet of the ejaculation. And the prostate is a 'g-spot' which can be stimulated anally to increase pleasure during sex.
