Maybe, I don't know, keeping you alive is one thing. Yeah, that seems to be a contribution. Another would be giving your lungs something to do. And pumping energy to your legs and the rest of your body in the form of oxygen carried by red blood cells. Assuming your cells are in an isotonic environment. Which most of the time they are. Unless you drank waaaay too much water or saltwater. Which most people tend to avoid doing. Oh, and it also makes your brain work. Just adding that as a short note.
