The instrument is called an ENDOSCOPE. It is used to perform ENDOSCOPY. These terms are general terms, hence I have capitalized them. The endoscope that is used to perform endoscopy is basically a flexible fiberoptic scope with an eyepiece or camera on one end and a lens on the other end. These are used to look inside of body cavities or hollow organs - tubes such as the esophagus. Endo means "to look inside", and scope describes the instrument that does it. Endoscopy means the process of looking inside. Medically, the terms are changed depending on what procedure or part of the body is being addressed. Examples are - Colon -o -scopy the process of looking inside the colon. Esophago-gastro-duodeno-scopy the process of looking inside the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. Also known as "Upper G.I." Laparoscopy the process of looking in the abdominal or pelvic cavity, usually through a small incision and commonly associated with surgery. "Laparoscopic Surgery". A similar instrument is used in other industries such as aerospace, boilermaking, and plumbing and is known as a "Borescope".

A laparoscope is used to visually examine the abdominal cavity during a procedure called laparoscopy. This instrument is a thin, flexible tube with a camera attached to it that allows a surgeon to see inside the abdomen without the need for a large incision.
