Aplastic anemia is a disease where the bone marrow is damaged and not working properly causing low counts in red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Anything that damages bone marrow could cause this type of disease including: radiation/chemotherapy, exposure to hazardous chemicals like benzene or pesticides, certain medication treating Arthritis and some antibiotics, autoimmune disorders, viral infections and pregnancy. For all the cases that have unknown origin, they classify this as idiopathic aplastic anemia. Many cases have no known cause.
