The liver filters out bad things in the blood that can damage a mammal and human being. Things like drugs, alcohol, bacteria, viral cells, unwanted and unneeded things for the mammals body and helps to fight off illnesses. The unwanted products get filtered and sent into the waste area of that mammal's body so it can be expelled. If too much of the "baddies" are filtered through the liver it can cause problems, like when an alcoholic drinks too much for too long. The liver gets sick with cirrhosis.

The liver also produces any glucose the animal needs by converting amino acids.
