The background substance of the ovary is called the stroma. The name for the expulsion of the secondary oocyte from the ovary is called ovulation.
The cell that is ovulated is called an egg cell, also known as an oocyte. It is released from the ovary during ovulation and can be fertilized by sperm to form an embryo.

Oogenesis is the name of the process by which female egg cells or oocytes develop to create an ovum, or egg cell. These cells go through a three step process; oogonium to a primary oocyte, secondary oocyte, and finally an ovum. The whole process occurs in the female ovaries.
