HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus) is a retrovirus that attacks the helper T cells, a key part of the immune system. If the immune system is significantly damaged by the activity of HIV a conditions called AIDS (Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) results.

AIDS is a later stage of development of HIV. The HIV virus kills white blood cells or T-cells, more specifically the type of cell killed is called a CD4+ T cell. When the quantity of T cells drops below 200 per µL of blood the condition goes from HIV to AIDS.
