Hemoglobin transports oxygen from areas of high oxygen concentration-like the lungs- to areas of low oxygen concentration-tissues that need oxygen. Human hemoglobin has four subunits- two beta and two alpha- and each subunit contains an iron molecule that is involved in binding oxygen.
