If there are any animals upstream that are living in the water or using the water (and, frankly, going to the bathroom in the water), then there will likely be giardia (a type of bacteria) in the water, which, depending on the concentration you ingest, could make you a little sick (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), or make you VERY sick. You could treat the water with chlorine tablets before drinking it. Outdoor stores like REI, EMS, Campmor, and probably even Dick's Sports etc., carry many types of water purification devices, ranging from cheap tablets to expensive machines. You are definitely taking a big chance if you drink water from a stream, unless you are at the very top of a mountain and you know that no animals are using the water upstream from you.
