There is a type of baby talk called " motherese" or "parentese" or "infant directed speech". These terms are used to describe the way adults and older children talk to infants. It includes using a sing songy voice, slower and clearer pronunciation, exaggerated facial expressions and repetition of sounds. The main effect seems to be entertainment and getting the baby's attention. Scientists have recorded similar types of 'parentese" in many countries around the world and there is a belief that it is, probably, instinctive.
