When a red blood cell matures it pushes out its nucleus and its internal structures, called spectrin go through a shape change.Shape is not cone or doughnut. The shape is entirely different. When nucleus is travelling out of the RBC along with other structures( spectrin etc. ) which are coming in the path of the nucleus, creates empty space ,which due to negative pressure gives a flat appearance. Thus we get a "C" shaped thickened area and a Tongue shaped flat area which is mobile."c" shaped thickened area covers the 2/3rd margin of RBC while the flat tongue shaped area covers the centre of RBC and 1/3rd margin of RBC.The flat central area is concavo-convex while the peripheral flat part is also concavo-convex but it is opposite to the central part thus giving an appearance of a sports Cap with a thick rounded margin. This Cap shaped RBC is flexible just like the Cap , thus giving different shapes apart from a simple sports Cap.These shapes can be verified through Scan electron microscopy as well as transmission electron microscopy
