Betamethasone is used for women who are likely to deliver under 34 weeks of gestation. In short, it helps the babies lungs with surfacant production. It is not used after 34 weeks of gestation. Optimal benefit is after 24 hours after initiation of therapy. It can also help with HELLP syndrome to improve platelet count and liver function enzymes. Some studies also suggest it decreases cranial bleeds in pre-term neonates. Dosage 12.5mg in two doses 24 hours apart. Repeating after the 24 hour window isn't necessary (in many studies) if delivery doesn't occur.
