Cancer pathologists use the staging and grading system as a way to universally describe the severity and degree of the cancer. It uses a scale from 1, being benign to 4, being extremely malignant. The stage of a tumor represents how large and invasive it is. The grade of a tumor represents how anaplastic/dedifferentiated/primitive the cells of the tumor are.
Doctors also use the standardized T(umor)N(ode)M(etastisis) system, promoted by the International Union Against Cancer. This diagnostic tool is more of a chart with a more accurate description of the cancer.
Stage 4 Cancer is described as a large tumor that is very invasive.
The grade of a stage 4 cancer would be very anaplastic.
Anaplastic- has reverted back to "look like" a stem cell and has ceased to look like the surrounding, healthy tissue in any respect.
