Tinnitus is a condition where the patient complains of a constant ringing noise in the ear even though there is no external source of noise. It can be caused when the ear is injured by a sudden loud noise, or it can be caused by a nerve disorder or even a structural anomaly within the ear. A CT scan may be used in a diagnosis.

Sometimes drugs may be used to try and alleviate this condition, but with limited success in many cases. One interesting treatment is where the audiologist plays various sounds to the patient in an attempt to mimic the sound the patient is hearing. When the sound has been duplicated, the patient listens to this sound over headphones for an extended period of time. Finally after a while, the headphones are removed and the patient's brain is fooled into thinking that the sound has disappeared now that the headphones are removed. The patient then no longer hears the noise at all. This doesn't work in every patient.
