Immobilize Immobilization prevents further injury to the affected area, usually the joints, and minimizes pain.
Compress
Compress means applying a cold compress, when the injury is new. This will prevent the swelling of the affected area, as it affect causes the blood vessels to contract, this minimizes the bleeding inside the injured area.
Elevate
Elevating prevents pooling of the blood to the affected area, and also prevents swelling.
Splint
Splinting aids the immobilization of the injured part. This is only first aid. If pain persists, go visit your doctor, he could give ou some pain killers or some mefenamic acid, to stop or minimize the swelling.

Ok, this is right out of Edgar cayce's "encyclopedia of healing" and it's worked really well for me.
1) Apple Cider Vinegar Packs: 4 cups apple cider vinegar in big bowl with a salt shaker amount of salt, mix with spoon, best left cold. Towel that can double up on the injury (soak), ring out but leave good and damp. I wrap plastic (seran) wrap around the towel 5 or 6 times to keep from leaking everywhere. Aleviates pain almost immediately helps heal the muscles, ligaments. Leave on for an hour, once to twice a day. Doesn't smell good but will definitely help!
2) Take an iron and calcium vitamin once a day, eat fruits and vegies, NO Meat.
3) Get a good back massage, to stimulate healing.
If it is your leg, stay off it as much as possible.
I've had a sprain before, and in my experience, I used Ice and tried to stay off my feet when I could.
